Two JVs bag £1.5bn Anglian Water major projects deal

Anglian Water has picked Ferrovial, MWH Treatment and two VolkerWessels UK firms for a £1.5bn framework covering its biggest water and wastewater projects.

Joint venture partners Ferrovial Construction and MWH Treatment have secured places on one contract, while VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerStevin Infrastructure have secured the second spot on the framework.

The Major Projects Framework marks a significant change in how Anglian plans to deliver its largest capital schemes across AMP8 and beyond.

The move follows Anglian’s decision to break with its historic multi-contractor alliance model towards a using two sets of integrated Tier 1 partners capable of scaling delivery as regulatory and environmental pressures intensify.

Selected Tier 1 delivery partners will operate under the more commercial approach in parallel with Anglian’s existing Strategic Pipeline Alliance, @one and Integrated Operational Solutions alliances.

The framework will initially run for five years, with an option to extend for a further five years to 2036.

Both JVs will provide an end-to-end service covering early contractor involvement, design, construction and commissioning, as well as managing their own supply chain ecosystems.

Anglian said the arrangement is intended to provide a more integrated and flexible delivery model for major capital projects across its operating regions in the East of England, East Midlands and North East.

One of the first major programmes expected to flow through the framework is around £450m of Coastal Waters Improvement work during AMP8.

This is expected to comprise 10 packages worth between £15m and £80m covering more than 55 individual schemes.

The programme will include civils, new process technology and additional storage aimed at tackling storm overflows, sea-level pressures and growth hotspots.

Early projects identified in the pipeline include around £100m of work at Southend, £70m at Great Yarmouth, £70m at King’s Lynn and £30m at Boston.

Contracts are expected to be formally signed up from 27 August following a standstill period.
